The new Mazda SUV banks on Skyactive technology to give that edge over competitors on frugality and better power delivery. CAR manufacturers, like their ilk in other fields, aren’t beyond indulging in hyperbole to pitch their products; one takes it with a pinch of salt. So when I read Mazda’s literature on its Skyactive technology, I was more amused than anything else.
Mazda claims
Skyactive, which features re-engineered engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis, along with a fresh design theme (Kodo – Soul in Motion), delivers new levels of performance, safety and environmental friendliness.
The five-seater CX-5 SUV is the first in line of this next generation from Mazda incorporating Skyactive, which the auto maker claims has the edge over the competition in the areas of frugality and efficiency of power delivery.
The CX-5 is also quite roomy – in front, across the rear passenger row and in storage space. And there was nothing to complain about over the features of this
Japanese import – sun-roof, an excellent (TomTom-based) navigation system, leather seats (powered for the driver but not the front passenger), dual-zone climate control, six airbags, auto bi-xenon headlights with auto-levelling, keyless push-button start/stop system, day running lights, rain sensor wipers and auto cruise. It also comes with the standard safety package – electronic brakeforce distribution with Brake Assist, tyre pressure monitor, stability control, traction control and anti-lock braking system.
The external lines of the CX-5 show that – and I will get flak for this – the Japanese are now making an effort to play the Koreans at their game. Here, the shape is not too curvy or muscular – just a sleek and streamlined look that belies the size of the vehicle. It’s only when you park it in your small porch that you become aware of its size.
The Mazda CX-5 is priced at RM165,219.20 (without insurance) for the AWD version and RM155,219.20 for the 2WD. Given what’s available in the range, I’d say this one holds its own in the field.
